DESCRIPTION

The Drakkar was the traditional and typical ship used by Scandinavian mariner for commerce, exploration and conquest. A full evolution of her shapes was reached within 9th and 13th century. The present Drakkar, or Viking Longship, is inspired to drawings taken in 1880 on an original longship discovered in a grave at Gokstad, near Sanderfjord (Christiana). The oak hull was 77 ft. 11 inches long with a breadth of 16 ft. 7 inches and a depth of 5 ft. 9 inches from top of keel to gunwale. One square sail and 16 oars on each side of the ship were present to reach a speed of 10 to 15 knots in presence of wind. The ship had a good sea behaviour an her shape allowed operations in shallow water and rivers too; furtheremore she was sufficiently light to be moved on ground by the same mariners. The hull was a klinker oak construction supported by light frames resting on top of the keel.

Although the klinker drawing is high demanding in terms of drawing time and verts number, the present model has been optimized to reach a very good compromise and a very smooth and detailed result. It can easily be defined a Low Poly 3d Drawing as the 3dsMax zipped file is only 5.6Mb large, including textures, while the 3dfile itself is in Blender of less then 2 Mb, to whom 3.3Mb of textures should be added. 18 pictures have been used for texturing; a very simple scenary, sea and sky, is included.
