America schooner was built by George Steers at William H. Brown Shipyard, New York City, N.Y. circa 1850-1851. Launched, 3 May 1851, just in time to participate to the Royal Yacht Society regatta in August 1851 around the island of Wight, England, she surprisengly won the race.

Immediately after she was sold to an english gentleman who changed her name to Camilla and later, caming back to U.S. was secretely bought in 1861 to Confederate government, then returning to England to change her name again in Memphis.

Later on, in the same year, she returned to U.S. risking to be captured and repairing in a river. After repair with the new name of USS America she was used as a dispatching vessel and blockader, being assigned to the South Atlantic Blocking Squadron (1862).

Decommissioned after the war she was bought by different privates and finally presented in 1921 to the Naval Academy. She survived up to 1941 when she was destroyed accidentally in a boat shed by the falling roof.
