Description

Uhunmwu-Ẹkuẹ (pendant masks) is a general term, with each mask having a specific name based on the subject it depicts. These masks are among the most renowned Benin artworks and depict a variety of human and animal heads, often worn on the belt or hip. The material and iconography determined who could wear them: warriors wore leopard-head masks, high-ranking officials wore ivory masks, and the Ọba wore brass crocodile-head masks. While most masks depict male faces, including Portuguese men reflecting historical ties, the Queen Idia masks, carved in ivory, are a notable exception.
