Description

Okukor, also known as a Benin Bronze Okukor Rooster. It's a replica of bronze sculpture that was looted from the Kingdom of Benin (now part of Nigeria) by British soldiers in 1897.The statue is considered a spiritual object and was originally located in the Oba's palace. The Benin Bronzes were used to decorate the Oba's palace and showcase the opulence of past rulers.

In 2021, Jesus College became the first institution to return a Benin Bronze to Nigeria. The return of the Okukor is part of a broader movement to repatriate looted artifacts to their countries of origin.

Omorogbe, Aigbe. Okukor, Bronze-cast(lost-wax), Private collection, Benin City.
