Jomo Kenyatta was Kenya's first president after independence from Britain. On the reverse (left side): The Kenyan coat of arms showing two lions holding a shield and spears. The inscription reads REPUBLIC OF KENYA at the top, the date 1971 on the left side, and TEN CENTS at the bottom. The coin appears to be made of bronze or brass with a golden-brown color. This coin was part of Kenya's decimal currency system introduced after independence, replacing the East African shilling. Ten cents was equivalent to 1/10 of a Kenyan shilling. The coin represents an important period in Kenya's history, coming less than a decade after the country gained independence in 1963, with Kenyatta serving as president from 1964 until his death in 1978.
