Delphinium: LarkspurDelphinium is a genus of about 300 species of perennial flowering plants native throughout the northern Hemisphere, and also on the high mountains of tropical Africa. All members of the genus are toxic to humans and livestock, and the name derives from the greek word for Dolphin, no doubt used to describe the elegant, dolphin shaped blooms. The size varies significantly among species, with some only reaching 10 cm, and others climbing to heights of 6 ft. The flower color can be blue, purple, white or yellow depending on the species and region. The juice of the flowers creates a blue ink when mixed with alum.
