Notes: Since World War I, this plant has come to represent fallen soldiers, and is often used in various remembrance ceremonies. It is also used at ceremonies for Anzac Day in Australia and New Zealand. The plant is a variable, erect annual which flowers in late spring. The stems hold large, showy flowers and a single plant can produce up to 400 that last only one day. It is a temperate native with a very wide area, from Africa to Asia and Europe where it grows in fields, meadows, roadside, disturbed ground, and grasslands.
