DESCRIPTION

Originally developed during the late years of the Soviet Union, the Zarya (Заря, meaning “Dawn” in Russian) was conceived as a non-lethal flashbang grenade designed for use by internal security forces, counter-terrorist units, and special operations teams. The goal was to provide a tactical advantage in close-quarters combat and riot control situations without causing permanent injury — a concept that was still relatively new at the time in Eastern Europe.

The first-generation Zarya grenade entered service in the early 1980s under the supervision of Soviet defense engineers who were tasked with developing specialized equipment for the Ministry of Internal Affairs (MVD) and the KGB’s Alpha Group. Built with the same rugged principles as Soviet military ordnance, it was simple in construction yet remarkably effective: upon detonation, it released a blinding flash of light exceeding several million candela, accompanied by a deafening concussive report that disoriented anyone within close range.

Throughout the 1990s and early 2000s, the Zarya-2 became a common sight among police and special forces across Russia, Ukraine, Belarus, and other post-Soviet nations. It was routinely deployed in riot control, building assaults, hostage rescues, and counter-terrorism operations, where its intense flash and thunderous sound effectively incapacitated suspects without lethal force. The grenade’s balance of simplicity and effectiveness made it particularly favored in urban warfare and confined environments.

Even decades later, the Zarya-series remains a symbol of Soviet-era engineering philosophy prioritizing function, reliability, and raw practicality over aesthetic refinement. Its design has influenced numerous modern stun grenades still in service today, both in Eastern Europe and beyond. Though often overshadowed by its Western counterparts, the Zarya-2 stands as a testament to a uniquely Soviet approach to tactical equipment: industrial, efficient, and enduringly effective.

Geometry
No N-gons
N-gons are polygons with five or more sides which might cause issues in certain processes like rendering or animation. Learn more
No faceted geometry
Faceted geometry uses flat surfaces without smoothing, which can look unrealistic on curves.
Learn more
Manifold geometry
Manifold geometry ensures all surfaces are properly connected, avoiding issues like edges shared by more than two faces.

Textures & material
PBR textures
PBR textures simulate how light interacts with materials, making the model look realistic under different lighting.
Required PBR textures:
- Base Color
- Roughness
- Metalness
- Normal

Square textures
Texture aspect ratio is the width-to-height ratio of a texture. Expected texture aspect ratio: 1:1
Learn more
Power of 2 texture sizes
Textures with dimensions in power of two (e.g. 512x512px, 1024x1024px) are used to optimize performance and memory usage.

Assigned materials
Materials are applied to the 3D model to allow visualize a model's surface properties and appearance.

UVs & naming
No UV overlaps
UVs overlap when multiple points on the 3D model's surface are mapped to the same point on the UV island causing texture stretching.
Learn more
UV unwrapped model
A UV unwrapped model means its 3D surface is flattened into 2D space, allowing textures to be applied accurately.
