HISTORICAL BACKGROUND
The Type 93 torpedo, famously nicknamed the Long Lance by Allied forces, was a formidable weapon developed by the Imperial Japanese Navy (IJN) in the 1930s.
Its defining feature was the use of pure oxygen instead of compressed air to run its engine, resulting in a number of crucial advantages. This oxygen-fueled system allowed the torpedo to carry a significantly larger warhead and achieve an unprecedented range and speed. The Long Lance could travel over 20,000 meters at 50 knots or an astonishing 40,000 meters at 36 knots. Crucially, the pure oxygen combustion left virtually no wake, making the torpedo incredibly difficult to spot and evade. These capabilities made it the most advanced naval torpedo in the world at the start of World War II. It gave Japanese surface fleets a decisive edge, allowing them to engage enemy ships from distances far exceeding the effective range of Allied counterparts. The devastating power and secrecy of the Long Lance contributed to Japan's early victories in naval night battles.
