HISTORICAL BACKGROUND
The Autoblinda 40 (AB 40) was an Italian armored car of World War II, adopted for service in 1940. It was developed by the firms Ansaldo and Fossati to replace obsolete World War I-era vehicles. Initially, the requirements for the armored car were formulated separately for the army and the police, but they were later merged. The AB 40 featured a four-wheel-drive chassis with independent suspension and two driving positions, which allowed it to quickly change direction of movement. Armament consisted of twin 8 mm machine guns in the turret and one machine gun in the rear. The main drawbacks were its weak armor and its purely machine-gun armament, which made it difficult to combat enemy vehicles. Later, a turret with a 20 mm cannon was installed on the chassis, creating the AB 41 variant, which replaced the AB 40 in 1941. Some AB 40s were modernized to the AB 41 standard. The vehicles were used in the Balkans, primarily in a police role.
