The Steyr ACR, or Advanced Combat Rifle, was a prototype flechette-firing assault rifle developed by Steyr Mannlicher for the US Army’s Advanced Combat Rifle program in 1989-1990. It utilized a 5.56×45mm SCF (Synthetic Case Flechette) cartridge, which consisted of a 5.56mm fin-stabilized, saboted flechette housed in a translucent plastic casing. It was one of the top four prototypes reviewed in Phase III of the ACR program, but it could not achieve the required 100% improvement in hit probability over the M16A2, the baseline for a successful ACR weapon.
