The AKS-74U, adopted by the Soviet military in 1979 as a compact variant of the AK-74. Known officially as the Ukorochenniy (shortened), it was developed primarily for armored vehicle crews, helicopter pilots, and Spetsnaz units. Unlike traditional submachine guns that fire pistol ammunition, the AKS-74U retains the 5.45×39mm cartridge. To function reliably with its shortened 8.1-inch barrel, the rifle utilizes a distinctive gas expansion chamber (muzzle booster) that increases backpressure to cycle the action while helping to tame the massive muzzle flash. It is famous in the West with nickname Krinkov. This term is actually a Western invention from the Afghan War era and is not used by Russians, who often affectionately refer to it as Ksyukha or Suchka. The weapon gained global notoriety as a trophy status symbol - most famously carried by Osama bin Laden. Although it was partialy replaced in modern Russian service by the AK-105 this rifle still remains legendary among enthusiasts.
