Cuban-born Clara Porset was a pioneer of modern design in Mexico. After studying architecture in New York and then Paris, she eventually settled in Mexico, dedicating her life to championing her mutually enriching vision of modernity and tradition. A fervent defender of historic artisan traditions, Clara Porset created thoroughly contemporary versions of classic Mexican vernacular forms, including the colonial butaque chair, itself a hybrid of Spanish and pre-Columbian archetypes. Despite others claiming her reinterpretations, Porset's designs for architect Luis Barragan's homes are by far her best known and the ones on which Luteca bases its pieces. Working directly with UNAM (National Autonomous University of Mexico), which preserves the legacy of Clara Porset's archives, our design team meticulously studied the construction of the original pieces to adapt them to her various forms and adaptations, offering truly unique pieces of iconic Mexican design.
