The mountain has an elevation of 2,285 metres. The lakeside town of Loiyangalani is located 50 kilometres west of Mount Kulal. Mount Kulal has been a biosphere reserve since 1978. Mt Kulal is commonly referred to as a 'Gem in the Desert', is an eroded extinct Pleistocene volcano in Northern Kenya, east of the southern end of Lake Turkana.
