HISTORY

The temple of St. Emidio Caves is ranked as one of the most important monuments of the city of Ascoli Piceno and represents a valuable prototype of Baroque religious art of the Marches. Erected in honor of the patron saint is called to the caves because its interior is made of a natural cave.
The small church is secluded, compared to the urban context, in front of the former church of St. Hilary, in a place full of greenery and silence where already in the year 250, the third century AD, it was known there were caverns of natural connected by tunnels, used by Christians as a necropolis.
According to tradition, St. Emidio, after being beheaded, 5 August 309, near the neighborhood of Porta Solestà, was erected in the place where the Temple of Sant'Emidio Red, he walked so far, to be buried, carrying in her hands her head.
At a later time, burial of the body of the saint, these caves were transformed into an oratory and in them were placed an altar and small ornaments.
The mortal remains of the patron and his disciples rested here for over four centuries, until the translation of their remains in the cathedral of Ascoli where he now rest in the sacred shrine in the crypt of St. Emidio.
This temple is one of the churches belonging to the route emidiano of the city, a path that connects all of the sites linked to the tradition, miracles, the life and martyrdom of the saint.
