Echinocactus Grusonii: Golden BallAlso known as the Barrel Cactus or Mother-in-laws cushion, Echinocactus Grusonii is a species of cactus native to east and central mexico. Despite being somewhat well known and easily recognizable, these cacti are rare and endangered in the wild. The population was critically reduced in the 1990's by the creation of the Zimapan Dam. Its lifetime is estimated to be roughly 30 years, during which the Golden Ball can grow up to 3ft in height. Small yellow flowers appear in summer around the crown of mature plants around 20 years of age. The Golden Ball is widely cultivated as an ornamental plant, and is considered easy and relatively fast growing in warm climates.
