The line of the Greater Good is not a border. It is a horizon - and the Horizon Cadre are the ones who walk it forward.
Where their footprints fall, the map is redrawn.
Every civilization of the Higher Path measures its progress by a single quiet metric: how far the horizon has moved today. That horizon is not an idea. It is a line held by soldiers, and the soldiers who hold it are the Horizon Cadre - the first formal rank any young aspirant earns once their training is complete and their conviction has been weighed and found sufficient.
They are not conscripts. Nobody in the Higher Path is. Each trooper in this five-strong formation volunteered, studied, meditated, drilled, and asked to be sent forward. They carry that choice in the way they stand. The smooth sealed ceramic of their armor is lightweight, modular, and repaired between engagements by the same engineers who designed it - a single continuous conversation between warrior and artificer that the older species of the galaxy have long forgotten how to have. Their helmets carry multi-spectrum optics that see heat, motion, intent. their long pulse rifles are tuned, calibrated, and treated less like weapons and more like instruments of a shared purpose.
The Horizon Cadre fights the way a choir sings - every voice distinct, every voice in unison. One lifts an arm and points, and four rifles align to the same vector without a word spoken. A target that would take a squad of lesser troops a full minute to suppress is reduced, by a Horizon Cadre, to a brief calculation and a single coordinated volley. When the smoke clears, the unit has already moved. Always forward. Always toward that horizon.
At the heart of every Cadre stands a veteran who has removed the helmet - a quiet signal that they no longer need the optics to see what needs to be done. They carry a heavier rifle, a steadier gaze, and the weight of every recruit who has ever asked them what the Greater Good actually means. The answer they give is never the same twice. But it is always true.
To the enemies of the Higher Path, the Horizon Cadre are not soldiers. They are the polite, patient sound of a future arriving whether you consented to it or not.
