Gigantic extraterrestrial creature asleep for millennia in the city of R'lyeh engulfed under the waves of the Pacific Ocean, Cthulhu is worshiped like a god by stray humans and aquatic beings who worship him immemorial through antediluvian sculptures . These reproduce its vaguely humanoid shape completed by a cuttlefish head, octopus tentacles and wings similar to those of a dragon1.

The writer August Derleth designates under the term myth of Cthulhu the set of literary pastiches which are inspired by the fictional universe of Lovecraft. The term remained, helping to multiply references to the creature in popular culture through literature, role-playing games and video games.
