This model is offered as it is

The car was functionally and mechanically designed to be as simple as possible, so no big mistakes could be made; The air-cooled 985 cc 25 Hp (19 kW) engines proved especially effective during the Afrika Korps actions in North Africa, under the desert heat. This was due to its oil-cooled configuration and the superior performance of the 4-cylinder Boxer engine.

Despite maintaining the same appearance for years (apparently only the rear bonnet had been modified on the 1954-1969 Volkswagen Type 1), more than 2,500 changes were made to the engine and other parts of the car in this period.

To favor the interior volume of the car, the engine is located behind the rear axle. However, in order not to compromise stability, the gearbox, differential and the engine itself formed a transaxle built entirely in light alloy and very compact, favored by the arrangement of the opposing four-cylinder boxer engine, which made it low and short. thus reducing the polar moment of inertia. Thanks to this rear boxer-longitudinal arrangement of the engine, a behavior similar to that of the rear engines positioned ahead of the axle was achieved without compromising the volume of the rear seat. In the 65 years that its production lasted, the Sedan had several different engines. These were: 800 cc; 900 cc; 1100 cc; 1200 cc; 1300 cc; 1302 cc; 1303 cc; 1500 cc; 1600 cc Carburetor and Platinum Ignition; 1600 cc Carburetor and Electronic Ignition; 1600 cc with Carburetor and Electronic Ignition and with the revolutionary Catalytic Converter; 1600 cc Electronic Injection with Generator and Catalytic Converter; and finally, 1600 cc of Electronic Injection with Alternator and Catalytic Converter.
