The Focke-Wulf Fw 190 (German: Focke-Wulf Fw.190 «Würger») was a German single-seat, single-engine piston monoplane fighter that served with the Luftwaffe during World War II. The Fw.190 was successfully used in various roles, in particular as a high-altitude interceptor (especially the Fw.190D), escort fighter, attack aircraft, night fighter, and proved itself to be a true workhorse of the Luftwaffe. In the autumn of 1937, the Reich Air Ministry commissioned several companies to develop a design for a new fighter to be used in conjunction with the Messerschmitt Bf.109. The Messerschmitt Bf.109 had proven itself to be an excellent fighter, but the Luftwaffe's top brass feared that it could be surpassed by new foreign designs and wanted to have a more modern fighter in reserve.
