DESCRIPTION

The Whitehead No.21 was an experimental bamboo-and-silk monoplane designed and built by German-American aviator Gustave Whitehead in Bridgeport, Connecticut. The aircraft was rumored to have taken flight on August 14, 1901, 2 years before the Wright Brothers' first powered flight took place. Whether the plane actually flew or not, however, remains a myth. Some people say that the plane took flight at least four times that day, but Whitehead's lack of logs prevents historians from confirming or denying whether this event actually took place. Two replicas of the experimental plane were built later on and have actually flown.

This model was made in collaboration with the Connecticut Air and Space Museum in Stratford, CT.
