Hello Friends,

A short story... When I was 8 years old I had a home-made go-cart. I drove it so much I finally broke the connecting rod and the engine died. =( My father owned an automotive repair shop and he ordered a new connecting rod for my Briggs & Stratton engine without letting me know. I awoke one morning to find the new connecting rod in a box sitting on our kitchen counter. It was like Christmas Morning !!!!

After school I raced to his shop to begin the repair. He offered no assistance but I soon had the engine running like new. He was impressed. Soon after, he brought me into his shop and showed me a 4 cylinder Jeep engine hanging on an engine stand. It was an old flat-head 4 WWII military engine.

He said "I want you to rebuild this engine". I balked and said "I can't do that!". He said this engine is just the same as the one you just worked on, but four cylinders instead of just one. Okay.... I'll Try. He watched over my shoulder and instructed me on how to use his valve grinding machine. Honing the cylinders, using new bearings, Facing the heads to flatten them, etc...

I was 8 years old and I had just completely rebuilt a four cylinder flat head engine by myself. I will never forget that week.

This story is about my life, and my Father passing down his vast knowledge of combustion engines to me. A true gift. He is now 87 years old and I am 58. I still ask him to explain any information about drive trains, transmissions, steering alignments, etc. My Father is a TRUE Master Mechanic!
