It is part of a planned renovation of the east side of the Grand Place, the central square of the city. Because different buildings will be demolished behind the eastern side of the market, creating space for a square with terraces (New Market) and the Groninger Forum. The Forum is intended as a general meeting place for residents and visitors of the city of Groningen. To achieve this, the Foundation Groninger Forum is established. This should provide a coherent program of cultural activities such as exhibitions, lectures, films and debates.
