In it was buried the founder of Campinas, Francisco Barreto Leme, on April 13 1782. The Bento Quirino Square, with its headquarters, was the "Celulla Mater" around which was formed and developed Campinas, then a drovers crossing point that went towards Goiás. In 1807 it was decided to transfer the headquarters of the parish to another place, building up a new church, the current Cathedral of Our Lady. da Conceição, which was completed and opened in 1883. It was the "Young Mother". But the people did not accept the "Old Mother" stopped being parish. Thus they claimed to continue as a parish, which was accepted by the Bishop of São Paulo, which created then the "Old Mother Church", the Parish of Santa Cruz, on May 08, 1870. In 1938, the parish was made official as N . Sra. do Carmo. The Carmo Matrix was reformed several times, and in 1929 was demolished and completely rebuilt in its neo-Gothic style it has today. On 6 November 1974, the Carmelite Mother of Pope Paul VI received the title of Basilica. The installation of the Basilica took place on June 22 the Holy Year 1975. It is a very dear church by the people of Campinas is the "Old Mother Church", the first church in the city.
