Later, the concept evolved in popular culture, becoming integral to stories involving ghostly crews doomed to roam the seas forever, often guarding their treasure or seeking vengeance.

In video games, pirate skeletons gained significant attention in franchises like The Secret of Monkey Island, where ghostly pirates and their skeletal forms humorously captured the essence of cursed, undead swashbucklers.
