When it senses that it is nearing death, it builds a nest from dry branches of a tree, seals the nest with an unknown adhesive, and waits for the sun to rise and ignite the dry branches. The Phoenix dies in this nest, burning itself to death. After dying, it remains dead for three days (this is considered the dark time of the month), and on the third day, it rises again from its ashes.
