The half-pike is a European-style spear with a broad spearhead. It was used by non-commissioned officers in infantry units. It was used to indicate the rank of a unit, and was also called a 'leading staff'. It was also used as a unit insignia or flag, and the number of surviving non-commissioned officers at the end of a battle was estimated based on the number of half-pikes remaining.
