Tom and Jerry is a series of cartoons created by American animators William Hanna and Joseph Barbera.
The storyline of each part depicts (with elements of light everyday satire) the rivalry between the main characters - Tom the cat and Jerry the mouse. The pilot episode of the project The Cat Gets a Kick was released on February 10, 1940. After their success, the Hanna-Barbera duo wrote the script for 113 more episodes, which were shown in theaters before the feature films until 1958. After the closure of Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer's cartoon division, the cartoon was produced by Rembrandt Films and MGM Animation/Visual Arts (which is also known as Sib Tower 12 Productions) under the direction of Gene Deitch and Chuck Jones, respectively, beginning in the 1960s.
Since the 1970s, spin-offs featuring Tom the Cat and Jerry the Mouse have been produced by Hanna-Barbera and Filmation. In 1992, the first full-length cartoon of the same name was shown in cinemas, where the main characters are voiced and talk throughout the film. Later, the creators decided to return to the style of the first episodes, releasing short episodes Cat's Mansion and Karate Guard. Currently, Warner Bros. owns the rights to the animated series.
Tom and Jerry quickly gained recognition from viewers and gained popularity all over the world. The cartoon gained fame due to its cruelty and violence. Often, short episodes show moments with explosions, cutting of heroes and even death, but most of the moments occur without blood, and the main characters are alive again by the next episode. Despite various criticisms, the animated series eventually became a cult classic and throughout its history it has received 7 Oscar awards for best animated short film.
Plot:The domestic cat Tom tries with all his might to catch the mouse Jerry, but he almost never succeeds. The locations of the animated series change regularly, Tom lives in different houses and with different owners, while Jerry always ends up there. In some cases, characters can live on a desert island, sail on cruise ships, relax on the beach, fly into space, etc., however, their confrontation continues even there. Nevertheless, in some episodes the characters get along quite peacefully with each other and can help each other in the most difficult moments.
The main characters have their enemies and friends. For example, the street cat Butch, the yard dog Spike and his son, the puppy Tyke, often make jokes on Tom, and Jerry s nephew, a little mouse named Nibbles (Tuffy), a duckling Quacker and a canary help in Jerry s pranks, and in one episode Jerry has a cousin - a strong man, at the sight of whom all the cats run away in all directions. In most episodes, the characters do not speak: all this is reduced to cries of pain or nervous swallowing, but in some cases there is full-fledged, albeit short, dialog.
Musical accompaniment plays a big role in short films: it tries to convey the feelings and emotions of a particular character. The role of composer Scott Bradley especially stands out. He combined elements of jazz and classical music to create complex and original scores.
