Debuting in 1992's Mortal Kombat, which launched the series of the same name, she became the final addition to the game as the developers then got deeper into the development cycle and decided they needed a female character. According to the canons of the series, Lieutenant Sonya Blade is the commander of the US Army Special Forces, and later a specialized government agency. Her goal in most released video games was to capture Kano and eliminate his Black Dragon gang. She is soon joined by her partner Jax Briggs, and in later games she is assisted by her daughter Cassie Cage.
