Hyottoko maskin English refers to a mask of a man with a slack-mouthed, crooked expression. The Hyottoko mask is also calledshiofuki-men(salt-blown mask). The name Hyottoko combineshi(fire) andotoko" (man), because the character is often depicted blowing fire through a bamboo pipe, which is why the mask's mouth is puckered and skewed to one side. The mask sometimes features asymmetrical eyes and a humorous, clown-like appearance. Hyottoko is often paired with the female mask Okame (or Otafuku), and the mask is used traditionally in Japanese dances and festivals as a symbol of good luck and humor. The character is said to have originated from masks used in Kyogen theater during the Muromachi period and is linked to myths about fire gods and fortune bringers in Japan.
