The Grand High Witch (Eva Ernst), as embodied by Anjelica Huston, is the very personification of glamour‑clad terror: an impossibly tall aristocrat with regal bearing and an ever‑haughty expression, hiding a ruthless cruelty beneath her seductive elegance. In public she dazzles in a black velvet gown with a plunging neckline and dramatic train, topped by an extravagant hat that amplifies her dominant “vamp” aura. Costume designer Marit Allen crafted those tight, theatrical silhouettes, accentuated by oversized jewelry (most memorably, the rat‑shaped ring). For the climactic transformation, Jim Henson’s Creature Shop applied a full facial mask, a pronounced hunchback piece, mechanical claws, and bone‑like prosthetics for her collarbones and hands—each application taking over six hours (and as long to remove) every day of shooting. Under the scorching lights and wearing green‑tinted contact lenses, Huston endured long, grueling sessions, at times even forgetting her lines beneath layers of latex and sweat.
