Prince Goro: The Four-Armed Terror of 1992

If you were haunting arcades in the early 90s, the name Goro didn’t just represent a boss; it represented a literal game over screen. Making his debut in the original 1992 Mortal Kombat as the sub-boss, Goro was the ultimate gatekeeper before Shang Tsung. He wasn't just another sprite; he was a hulking, stop-motion nightmare that redefined what a boss fight felt like. Goro is the Prince of the Shokan, a half-human, half-dragon race from Outworld. Standing over eight feet tall with four massive arms, he was the reigning champion of the Mortal Kombat tournament for 500 years after defeating the Great Kung Lao. John Tobias and Ed Boon drew inspiration from the legendary Harryhausen-style stop-motion monsters. In fact, Goro wasn't a digitized actor like Liu Kang or Scorpion; he was a clay and latex miniature (sculpted by Curt Chiarelli). This gave him a jerky, uncanny movement that made him feel otherworldly.

His name is believed to be derived from the Japanese word goro, which is a common name for a fifth son, or potentially linked to the sound of something heavy and rolling—fitting for a guy who crushes bones.

In the first game, Goro was notoriously cheap (in the best way possible). Strengths: Total brute force. His Shokan Grab could take off a massive chunk of your health bar, and his Tele-Stomp was the bane of any button-masher. He had high priority on almost all his moves, meaning he’d usually hit you first.

Weaknesses: If you knew the cheese, Goro had a predictable AI. Most veterans remember the Jump Kick Strategy: timing your jump kicks and retreats perfectly could loop his AI into a cycle he couldn't break. He was also a massive target, making him susceptible to projectiles if you kept your distance.

Goro’s contribution to the genre cannot be overstated. He introduced the concept of the Wall—a boss so physically imposing that they changed the scale of the screen. His presence helped Mortal Kombat stand out against Street Fighter II by offering a darker, more cinematic boss encounter. Over the decades, Goro has evolved from a mindless brute to a complex political figure in Outworld. He’s been a playable hero, a tragic fallen prince, and even a corpse in some timelines. Despite his many deaths and resurrections, he remains the gold standard for mid-bosses. He proved that to be a legend, you don't need a complex combo string—you just need four arms and a terrifying roar.
