Francis of Assisi (1182-1226) - religious ascetic and poet of the 12th century, nicknamed the “Mirror of Christ.” For his services to the revival of Catholicism, he was canonized by Pope Gregory IX. Francis was equally close to sinners and righteous people, and managed to create one of the largest and most influential mendicant monastic orders in Europe.
