A shield-maiden (Old Norse: skjaldmær) was a female warrior from Scandinavian folklore and mythology.

Shield-maidens are often mentioned in sagas. Even the mythical Valkyries, minor female deities with the purpose of choosing the most heroic of those fallen in battle to take them to Valhalla, may have been based on such shield-maidens.
