Dante is a Crusade warrior (an adaptation of the original) who is fatally shot during a battle. He then meets Death himself, who tries to get him, however, Dante manages to destroy her and takes his scythe.

He follows his journey in search of his beloved Beatrice, and it is revealed that she has been kidnapped and is in Hell. So he sets out to claim his beloved's soul from Lucifer's hands.

Then, the warrior manages to open the Gates of Hell and enter it, and meets Virgil, a Latin poet who promises to guide him during his journey. While going through the circles of hell and facing monsters, many of them adaptations of the book that inspired the game, only to end up having to confront their parents and the sin they committed.
