DESCRIPTION

The first silver coins were minted in the ancient kingdom of Lydia (in what is now western Turkey) around the 6th century BCE. These coins, famously issued during the reign of King Croesus (circa 550 BCE), were among the earliest standardized silver coinages. They were crafted with remarkable artistic detail, often featuring a lion confronting a bull, symbolizing strength and fertility. Lydia initially used electrum (a natural alloy of gold and silver) for coinage, but King Croesus introduced a bi-metallic system with separate pure gold and silver coins by chemically separating silver from gold. These early silver coins, known as Croeseids, set standards for weight and design that influenced coinage throughout the ancient Mediterranean region.
