The Buckley Class Destroyer Escorts were a class of ships built and launched between 1943 and 1944 to be used in the war effort during World War II. These ships were smaller slower and did not have as much range as the fleet destroyer classes but they were easier, less costly, more quickly manned and more maneuverable. More than 150 of these ships were built and saw service in the US Navy or the British Navy as Captain Class Frigates.

These ships included armament of three 3 inch artillery pieces, a single quad 40 mm anti aircraft gun, three torpedo launch tubes for standard M14 torpedoes and up to eight 20 mm cannons. They also carried M24 mousetrap launchers, two after racks for roll off depth charges and 6 to 8 k-gun launchers for depth charges. They also had the latest sonar and underwater search gear for anti-submarine warfare.

The Buckley class Destroyer escort was featured in the movie “The Enemy Below”. Most of the movie was filmed on board a Buckley Class ship.
