The 1882 Thornycroft 62-foot torpedo boats were revolutionary second-class vessels ordered by international navies and the British Admiralty. Built at the Chiswick yard in London, they were designed as fast, nimble craft utilizing torpedoes.

Historical SignificanceThis vessel was designed by the pioneering naval architect John Isaac Thornycroft, who is credited with advancing high-speed marine engineering. Depending on the nation of service, the 62-footers were used either for coastal harbor defense or designed with the capability to be carried as secondary mother ship craft aboard larger battleships.The narrow hull and “Ram Bow” give this Torpedo Boat a distinctive, shark-like appearance with traces of Steampunk esthetics. They represent British Victorian design at its best.
