DESCRIPTION

The chest piece has two sides: the diaphragm and the bell. The diaphragm is a flat, circular surface with a thin membrane that is sensitive to high-frequency sounds like heart and lung sounds. The bell is a smaller, concave surface that is better at capturing low-frequency sounds.

When the healthcare provider places the diaphragm or bell on different parts of the patient's body, such as the chest, back, or abdomen, they can listen to various sounds produced by the internal organs. For example, a stethoscope is commonly used to listen to heartbeats, lung sounds, and bowel sounds, as well as to detect abnormalities like murmurs, wheezing, or irregular rhythms.
