This bronze plaque can be interpreted as depicting the gateway to the Oba's palace in Benin, it features a tower crowned with a bronze-cast bird and snake, marking the entrance to the palace or passageways between courtyards. Here, the roof is adorned with wood shingles instead of palm leaves. The structure is supported by pillars engraved with decorative faces, and it features a bird on top, typically an ibis or sometimes a thrush, symbolizing soothsaying and prophesying in Benin culture. The two armed palace guards on the steps wear aprons and tall coral collars, indicating their high rank within the royal court. The two other attendants are minimally clothed, wearing only small coral necklaces and holding handheld fans. Above the roof, a four-leaf motif associated with Olokun, the god of water, is prominently displayed. This motif frequently appears on bronze plaques from Benin.
