Emmanuel Frémiet, nephew and student of François Rude, also excelled in the field of monumental statuary. Under the Third Republic, he obtained important public commissions, including the gilded bronze equestrian statue of Joan of Arc, erected in 1874 on the Place de Rivoli in Paris (today's Place des Pyramides), near the place where she was wounded. A year after this realization, Frémiet presented this effigy at the Salon of 1875, whose pose recalls the prayers of the Middle Ages and the Renaissance.

The choice of subject testifies to the glorification of the great figures of national history during the second half of the 19th century, in particular Joan of Arc, whose popularity was revived at the time of the 1870 war. A parallel is drawn between the situation of France in 1429, invaded by the English army but on the verge of reclaiming its territory, and that of the country in 1870, occupied by the Prussians but resisting the invader in a heroic manner.

Joan of Arc, by Frémiet. This recently restored work allows us to appreciate the quality of the artist's style, paying constant attention to the respect of proportions and the archaeological precision of details. The statue in the Place des Pyramides had been met with a chorus of criticism because of the stiffness and coldness of its military representation, at a time when the character was adorned with feminine values, grace, beauty and purity. Consequently, Frémiet endeavors here to feminize his subject, as shown by the softness of the modeling under the armor, the kneeling and slightly arched back pose, and the long untied hair escaping the veil falling from the helmet.

Despite the enthusiastic reviews, this monumental plaster created as a tomb statue, did not find a buyer at the Salon. It was therefore never cast to size but reduced for the edition, in bronze and in Sèvres cookie.

No unsupported objects
Unsupported objects:
- Lights
- Cameras
Learn more
Geometry
No N-gons
N-gons are polygons with five or more sides which might cause issues in certain processes like rendering or animation. Learn more
No faceted geometry
Faceted geometry uses flat surfaces without smoothing, which can look unrealistic on curves.
Learn more
Manifold geometry
Manifold geometry ensures all surfaces are properly connected, avoiding issues like edges shared by more than two faces.

Textures & material
PBR textures
PBR textures simulate how light interacts with materials, making the model look realistic under different lighting.
Required PBR textures:
- Base Color
- Roughness
- Metalness
- Normal

Square textures
Texture aspect ratio is the width-to-height ratio of a texture. Expected texture aspect ratio: 1:1
Learn more
Power of 2 texture sizes
Textures with dimensions in power of two (e.g. 512x512px, 1024x1024px) are used to optimize performance and memory usage.

UVs & naming
No UV overlaps
UVs overlap when multiple points on the 3D model's surface are mapped to the same point on the UV island causing texture stretching.
Learn more
UV unwrapped model
A UV unwrapped model means its 3D surface is flattened into 2D space, allowing textures to be applied accurately.
