Description

Eseiku, Dwarf Head

In the art of Benin, which is primarily associated with the Edo people in Nigeria, dwarfs play a significant role. Dwarfs are often depicted in Benin art and culture, and they hold a special status within the kingdom. These dwarfs, known as “Igodo” in the Edo language, are believed to possess supernatural abilities and are considered guardians of the Oba (king) and the royal court.

Dwarf figures are commonly represented in Benin bronze and brass sculptures, and they are often shown carrying staffs or swords. These figures are not meant to be realistic representations but rather symbolic and stylized depictions of these revered beings. Dwarfs are believed to have the power to ward off evil spirits and protect the king and the kingdom.
