Myrciaria Cauliflora: Jabuticaba Also known as the Brazilian Grapetree, Myrciaria Cauliflora is nattive to the Minas Gerais, Goiás and São Paulo states in Brazil. The tree is known for its purplish-black, white-pulped fruits which grow directly on the trunk; they can be eaten raw or be used to make jellies, jams, juice or wine. The name Jabuticaba is derived from Tupi, and means the place where the tortoises are found. The tree is a slow-growing evergreen that can reach a height of 45 ft if not pruned. The leaves are salmon-pink when young, turning green as they mature. Due to the short shelf-life, fresh jabuticaba fruit is rare in markets outside areas of cultivation. It is also widely cultivated as a Bonsai in Taiwan and the Carribbean, and the tree appears on the coat of arms of Mina Gerais, Brazil.
