The RGD-5 (РГД-5) is one of the best-known post-World War II Soviet hand grenades — a light, impact/fracture fragmentation grenade that entered widespread service in the 1950s. Designed in the wake of wartime lessons, the RGD-5 was intended to replace older, bulkier models with something simpler, lighter, and cheaper to mass-produce while retaining effective lethality and battlefield reliability
Operationally, the RGD-5 was valued for its reliability and straightforward employment: it delivered a lethal fragmentation effect within a limited radius while remaining compact enough for airborne, mechanized, and light infantry operations. Over time a range of training, practice, and inert variants — along with different fusing options — were produced to suit training needs and compatibility with diverse launcher systems and doctrines.
Despite being an older design, the RGD-5’s influence has endured. Its engineering philosophy — small, light, easy to manufacture, and effective at short range — shaped the development of many subsequent grenades and continues to inform military small-arms logistics. Today the RGD-5 remains an iconic example of mid-20th century Soviet munition design: unadorned, utilitarian, and reliably deadly when used on the battlefield.
