- The 1st engraving refers to what King Leonidas replied to the Persian emissary when he was asked to lay down his weapons, Leonidas replied _ΜΟΛΩΝ ΛΑΒΕ_! meaning Come and get them (if you can)!
- The 2nd, Η ΤΑΝ Η ΕΠΙ ΤΑΣ refers to a very famous Spartan saying the wives of the soldiers used to tell their husbands before battle, _Come with your shield... or on it_ - which meant victory or death - never surrender.
