T-64A (GBTU index - Object 434) is a Soviet medium and main battle tank, developed in the early 1960s at the Kharkov Design Bureau for Mechanical Engineering. Serially produced since 1969, in parallel with the medium and main battle tanks T-55, T-62 and T-64. Initially, it had the designation Tank T-64 with a smoothbore gun D-81.
Adopted by the Soviet Army of the USSR Armed Forces by the Decree of the Central Committee of the CPSU and the Council of Ministers of the USSR of May 20, 1968, the same decree gave the tank the designation T-64A. On January 22, 1973, the order of the Minister of Defense of the USSR No. 021 was issued on the adoption of the T-64A and T-64AK tanks (commander version of the T-64A).
