  • A desiccator is a chamber or box that is designed to absorb water vapor from reactants that are hygroscopic.
  • Hygroscopic reactants are able to absorb water.
  • Desiccators are sealed containers that are used for drying samples under atmospheric pressure or vacuum pressure.
  • These can also protect chemicals that are hygroscopic, as well as protect samples from dust and moisture in the air.
  • Desiccators are sealable enclosures containing desiccants used for preserving moisture-sensitive items such as cobalt chloride paper for another use.
  • A common use for desiccators is to protect chemicals which are hygroscopic or which react with water from humidity.
  • This type of glass desiccator is associated with the German chemist, Carl Remigius Fresenius (1818-1897). An example of “Fresenius's Desiccator for drying alkaloids by simply exposing them in a close vessel over sulphuric acid” was shown to a local English chemical association in 1872.
