Chicago-based Holly Hunt has introduced the Great Outdoors collection, including styles by French designer Christian Liaigre — a blend of Liaigre’s elegant minimalism and the sturdy modernism Hunt’s city is famous for. Liaigre’s new teak lounge chair, St. Barts Ile de Re, has a curved back and a muscular frame that seems solidly braced against the breeze. The interior designer of New York’s chic Mercer hotel, Liaigre perhaps improbably began his career breeding horses in France’s Vendée region. Known for sunflower fields and spacious skies, it is not so unlike the American plains, where Liaigre’s new designs seem right at home. In 2010 Christian Liaigre, whom The Wall Street Journal Magazine recently called “The Grand Minimalist,” designed a lounge chair for the Great Outdoors collection at Holly Hunt. Liaigre is best known as the interior designer of the Mercer Hotel, but his career began as a horse breeder in the Vendée. The chair, called the St Bart’s Ile de Ré, is teak, a rainforest hardwood often used for outdoor furniture because of its unsurprising ability to withstand the elements. The chair has a curved back, sturdy frame and back legs seemingly poised on the brink of a canter.
