3D model of the Bauhaus Dessau buildingPurchase a downloadable version of one of the finest 3D building models of the 20th century. This is a fine example of modernist architecture from the 1920s. The original Bauhaus building has UNESCO World Heritage status and is situated in the German municipality of Dessau-Roßlau. This large town is famous for this influential school of art, architecture and design which changed current thinking about the design of manufacturing and buildings. This modernist movement sought to marry art with everyday function at a time when products had become soulless and bland. The ideals were to create beautiful objects that were well built, functional and practical.

The Bauhaus school was founded in 1919 after Walter Gropius transformed the Grand-Ducal Saxon School of Arts and Crafts that was originally located in Weimar. Gropius was the principal at Grand-Ducal Saxon and he was responsible for attracting artists such as Wassily Kandinsky, Paul Klee and Herbert Bayer to lecture there. Although its founder, Gropius, was an architect, the college did not have a department of architecture at the beginning. The stunning new school buildings that were to be located in Dessau were designed by Gropius in 1925 by order of the city who financed the structure and provided the land. The imposing glass façade was a design Gropius favoured, and the white frontage of the structure perfectly showcased the stark, black window frames. The buildings were studios, workshops and offices in blocks of two, three and four storeys linked together by glass walkways. Gropius also moved his office to this building.

Not many years after its completion, in 1932, the college was closed down due to political changes. The buildings and the town itself suffered extensive bomb damage during the Second World War, with very little repair work being carried out for many years. Its historical importance was recognized in 1972 and thorough renovations were carried out at this time. Once UNESCO World Heritage status was awarded, further improvements were implemented in 2006. Driven by the Bauhaus Dessau Foundation that was founded in 1994, the buildings are once again a thriving centre for design and education that is preserving the original values and ideas of the college.

Although the school itself was not open for long in the 20s and 30s, the staff and students of the college spread the ideals of their concepts around the world and it had a huge influence on modern design. Pieces of furniture, private residences, factories and housing blocks found all around the globe clearly have their roots in the principles of this famous school.
