It was founded in January 12, 187, as a private school for boys by a named association Society Cult of Science, where the members made to the Masonic Lodge Independence. Composed of farmers, merchants and intellectuals of the city, among them were: Antonio Pompeu de Camargo; Francisco Glicério, Sales Courses that later would become president of Brazil 1898-1902), Jorge Krug; Boniface Joaquim do Amaral, the Viscount of Indaiatuba, Joaquim Egidio de Souza Aranha, the Marquis of Three Rivers; Cândido Ferreira, and the Baron of Atibaia. The school name reflects the influence of positivism of its founders. In 1890 the school went through a crisis and had to close its doors until 1896, when it was reopened under the aegis of the government of São Paulo as State Gymnasium. Until 1964, when a controversial education reform was promoted by the military regime, the Cult to Science College was an equal and high-quality school, frequented both by the economic elite and the middle class.
